Personal Statement

I am co-director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics (BFG) at Cedars-Sinai, with expertise in cancer epigenomics, functional annotation and prediction of noncoding gene regulatory regions, and whole-genome sequencing technologies. From 2008 to 2014, I was director of bioinformatics for the University of Southern California/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Sequencing Core, where my group developed software pipelines to analyze whole-genome bisulfite-sequencing (WGBS), ChIP-seq, RNA-seq and other NGS methods. I led a project to sequence the first complete DNA methylation map of any cancer using WGBS, and collaborated to generate and analyze sequence data as part of the ENCODE and PsychENCODE Consortia (principal investigator Peggy Farnham, PhD), and TCGA Consortium (principal investigator Peter Laird, PhD). I currently develop cancer genomics software tools as a principal investigator (PI) in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Informatics Technology for Cancer Research Consortium, and I develop integrated cancer epigenomics pipelines as a PI in the NCI Genomic Data Analysis Network Consortium. I recently moved to Cedars-Sinai with Simon Gayther, PhD, to form the BFG Center, an integrated, interdisciplinary group with the goal of developing end-to-end research workflows and training opportunities for genomic and high-throughput functional analysis of patient samples.
