For residents who elect to follow the cardiac track for American Board of Thoracic Surgery certification, the first year is divided between six months on general thoracic surgery and six months on cardiac surgery.

Clinical assignments in the first year allow the resident to develop the knowledge and operative skills to assure chief-level responsibilities in the second year. Residents are involved in all aspects of patient care, including preoperative evaluation, intra-operative decisions, postoperative care and follow-up. Direct faculty supervision is maintained at all times.

In the second year, the cardiac-track resident spends a year as chief resident on the cardiac surgery service. The resident is expected to operate on complicated and difficult patients and oversee the care of the patients on the service. In addition, the resident is expected to teach and supervise the first-year resident and any other residents on the service.
