Training & Curriculum
Research
For this component, fellows have the following responsibilities:
- Collaboratively maintaining a smooth operation of human clinical trials and laboratory
- Managing, acquiring and analyzing clinical research data
- Ensuring patient safety during research studies
- Maintaining projects' regulatory compliance in accordance with the guidelines of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Cedars-Sinai Institutional Review Board, and other regulatory bodies
- Reporting to the program director on a regular basis
- Publishing or presenting new research data for abstract or publication submission
Research-related procedures include the following minimums:
- Near infrared spectroscopy — 20 documented monitoring procedures with a supervising expert.
- Microelectrode sympathetic nerve activity — 20 documented monitoring procedures with a supervising expert.
- Central venous pressure monitoring with tonometry — 10 documented monitoring procedures with a supervising expert.
- Vascular doppler for brachial arterial flow — 20 documented doppler studies with a supervising expert.
- Power Lab Software Application — demonstrate proficient use of electronic chart recorder to supervising expert.
Clinical
For this component, the responsibilities of fellows include the following:
- Conducting thorough patient assessments
- Organizing treatment plans and writing prescriptions
- Preparing a dictation for each patient visit
Fellows spend half a day at our weekly Hypertension Clinic and provide outpatient care to the patients. Fellows are supervised by Florian Rader, MD or other Hypertension Center members.
The fellow must present all the patients seen in the clinic to the attending physician prior to dispensing medications, implementing treatment plans and dictating clinic notes. The result of the patient encounter will be documented in the form of clinic notes, as dictated by the fellow and approved/cosigned by the attending.
The fellow is responsible for performing 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and central venous pressure monitory by pulse telemetry.
Fellows do not work overnight or take calls; however, he or she will be the after-hours contact for assigned research projects. Fellows may need to work on weekends to accommodate the school and work schedules of recruited research subjects.
Didactic
For the didactic component of the Hypertension and Vascular Biology Fellowship, our goal is to deliver a well-rounded educational experience to advanced trainees in hypertension and vascular biology. We offer a broad range of didactic conferences and mentoring.
Hypertension Grand Rounds
The Hypertension Grand Rounds are held monthly on Monday at noon. This activity is intended primarily for multidisciplinary physicians and research personnel from the specialty areas of cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, internal medicine, pediatrics and neurology who treat and/or investigate diseases related to hypertension. The objectives of the series are for fellows to learn how to accurately assess blood pressure in clinical settings, apply treatment recommendations for patients with hypertension and other comorbidities to improve quality of life, and review the workup and treatment recommendations for patients with drug-resistant hypertension.
Hypertension Center Clinical Highlights Symposium
The Cedars-Sinai Hypertension Center 2017 Clinical Highlights Symposium provides a comprehensive review of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this complex and multifaceted disease. The course format consists of case-based lectures reviewing the latest evidence, recommendations and scientific principles, which aims to provide clinicians with effective strategies to incorporate into daily medical practice.
Smidt Heart Institute Grand Rounds
The Smidt Heart Institute Grand Rounds are held weekly on Tuesday mornings. This activity is geared toward health professionals who manage cardiac conditions such as heart failure, valvular heart disease and symptomatic and/or life-threatening abnormal cardiac rhythms. The objectives of the series are for fellows to learn how to utilize the best medical and interventional/surgical practice to treat patients with heart disease, choose what is currently the most effective and cost-effective diagnostic modality to evaluate patients with heart disease and to critically review peer-reviewed literature to enhance diagnostic and clinical cardiology skills to better diagnose and treat heart disease.
