Facilities & Resources
Fellows are actively involved in the management of more than 1,800 critically ill and injured patients each year within the 24-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). The SICU is a surgically directed unit that provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for a diverse population of general surgical, trauma, vascular, cardiothoracic, transplant and neurosurgical patients.
For fellows who elect to pursue a second year as an Acute Care Surgery Fellow, attending privileges are granted with a graduated level of clinical responsibility. This progression transitions from direct to indirect supervision, and is supported by a structured educational curriculum specifically designed to advance operative proficiency, clinical leadership and academic development in acute care surgery.
Daily multidisciplinary rounds are conducted by members of the surgical critical care faculty, all of whom are board-certified general surgeons with ABS board certification in surgical critical care. This model ensures consistent, high-level supervision, hands-on mentorship, and an evidence-based approach to the management of complex surgical critical care patients.
